 For the lexicographers: the peculiarity of this dictionary is in this, that the meaning of the words must emerge from the etymology, i.e. from the ‘history’ of the word, and from the similarity with the other European words. As for the langue de départ (in this case, Italian) there must be, constantly, at least one short sentence, to exemplify the meaning. As for the other languages, a short sentence can occur occasionally, as from the judgment of the lexicographer. For example, in the word ‘abbasso’, ‘down with’, the corresponding German word, ‘nieder+ dat’, can be accompanied by a short sentence, like ‘nieder mit den Tyrannen’.  ----- Another example: the entry ‘abbecedario’ can be translated into German with the words ‘Abc Buch’ and ‘Abecedarius’: probably ‘Abecedarius’ means something different; therefore, it is up to the German lexicographer showing the nuances, or different meanings [often these are false friends].

Prefazione

Poche parole occorre premettere al dizionario che qui si presenta.
L’unità culturale dell’Europa o, meglio, della parte occidentale di essa, andò in frantumi con la Riforma.
Oggi, a distanza di cinque secoli, di tale unità occorre ritrovare le radici, onde ricostituirla.
La lingua italiana, come, del resto, le altre lingue del nostro continente, va pertanto studiata non più come lingua nazionale, ma come lingua europea, ovvero, nel contesto delle moderne lingue europee.
Questo, e non altro, è il fine del nostro dizionario ‘europeo’, che nell’edizione italiana esce per i tipi dell’editore ____ ____ _____.
